The Science

What the research actually says about high-polyphenol olive oil

High-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil is one of the most studied foods in modern nutrition research. Below is a look at what that research has explored, shared for general education.

Study context

The studies summarised here involved particular olive oils, dietary patterns, doses and participant groups. They did not test Lumen One.

What the findings mean

Their findings do not establish that Lumen One will produce the same effects for every individual. No health outcome is promised or guaranteed, and any health effect should be considered within a healthy diet involving a variety of foods.

Food, not medicine

Lumen One is a food, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Speak with a qualified health professional for advice specific to you.

Polyphenols, explained

The science, without the spin.

In the European Union, food authorities (EFSA) permit a single approved statement for olive oil polyphenols: that they contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, at an intake of 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and related compounds per day. It is a statement about protecting fats in the blood from oxidation, not about disease.

Australia regulates food and health claims separately, so we keep it simple: we publish what is in the bottle, batch by batch, and link the original research below so you can read it in full.

What the research shows

Why high-polyphenol olive oil matters

Not all extra virgin olive oil delivers the same concentration of beneficial plant compounds. High-polyphenol EVOO combines healthy monounsaturated fats with naturally occurring antioxidants, offering benefits that extend well beyond flavour.

Heart & circulation

High-polyphenol EVOO brings together heart healthy monounsaturated fats and naturally occurring antioxidants. In controlled human trials, higher-polyphenol oils improved HDL cholesterol, reduced oxidised LDL and lowered other markers of oxidative stress compared with lower polyphenol oils. This helps explain why quality EVOO holds such an important place in heart healthy Mediterranean eating.

Brain & cognitive function

Research suggests EVOO may help support memory, attention and healthy cognitive ageing. In PREDIMED cognitive trials, older adults following a Mediterranean diet supplemented with EVOO performed better on measures of memory and global cognition than control groups. Emerging research is examining whether EVOO's phenolic compounds provide additional support for long-term brain health.

Oxidative & inflammatory balance

Olive polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol, oleacein and oleocanthal help the body manage everyday oxidative stress. Human trials show high-polyphenol oils can reduce markers of lipid oxidation more effectively than oils containing fewer polyphenols. These compounds are also being studied for their influence on the body's natural inflammatory pathways.

Cellular defence & healthy ageing

Every cell is exposed to oxidative stress from normal metabolism, lifestyle and the environment. Olive oil studies have recorded favourable changes in markers associated with oxidative damage, with high-polyphenol oils showing their clearest advantage in protecting blood lipids from oxidation. This is why freshness, early harvesting and verified polyphenol levels matter.

What matters most

Polyphenol content.

Many mass-market EVOOs contain under 100 mg/kg of polyphenols. Every Lumen One release is independently lab tested and released only when it exceeds our internal standard of 400 mg/kg.
